Boxer - Bruce - Urgent! - Large - Adult - Male - Dog
URGENT, FOSTER HOME NEEDED 05/22/13: The Future Is Looking Good For Bruce Since our last update about Bruce it has been necessary for him to return to the Ophthalmologist FIVE more times for treatment. He has another appointment scheduled for later this week and we are hoping he will finally get a good report. The ulcer on Bruce?s right eye has healed, however, the left eye?s ulcer is still active. The uveitis is controlled in each eye. There was a small mass on the left eyelid. The doctor removed a portion of it so that it was no longer irritating the eye. There is also residual fluid in the left cornea. This is being treated with a medication called Muro 128 to help draw out the fluid. Uveitis can sometimes require lifelong medication, however, Bruce has been weaned off this medication at this time. Currently, he still requires treatment for the ulcer in his left eye. Indolent ulcers can reoccur at any time, however, they are less likely to be found where there has been a grid keratotomy performed (Bruce had grid keratotomy procedures performed in both eyes). He will likely need yearly rechecks once the ulcer heals in the left eye. He may need to stay on the Muro 128 medication for the left eye indefinitely. Long term cost predictions are difficult to assess at this time. Please consider sending a donation to help with Bruce's medical bills which are extensive. 04/23/13: New Picture, update coming soon - I'm in boarding please consider fostering me 04/07/13: Poor Poor Bruce Bruce arrived in NYC but life in the city was too overwhelming for him right now. Unfortunately, his eyes were not healing and we had to schedule an appointment with an eye specialist. The Ophthalmologist wanted to see him right away and we were thrilled that the doctor was able to make room for him. The eye doctor did several tests and diagnosed Bruce with Uveitis and Indolent Ulcers in both eyes. She felt the most likely cause of his condition was a result of his heartworm. She said the ulcers were secondary to the uveitis at this point and she wanted to have his eyes stabilize prior to performing more procedures on his corneas. Uveitis is basically inflammation of the internal structures of the eye. This inflammation caused fluid accumulation in the cornea which made Bruce's cornea's more fragile and susceptible to ulcers. Both of these conditions are extremely painful and the doctor prescribed pain medication to relieve his discomfort. She also prescribed two different eye-drops and a strong antibiotic. Bruce has an appointment to return to the Ophthalmologist next week to see if his eyes are responding to treatment. Indolent ulcers can be quite frustrating to treat and can take months to heal. The doctor stated that Bruce may require multiple procedures (debriding and grid keratotomies) as well as topical medications to fully heal. On the bright side, treatment was started early and we are hopeful that he will recover more quickly than expected. We all know that boxers have a tough constitution when it comes to facing adversity. Bruce is a really wonderful and gentle with all people. Everyone who spends any time with him has commented on his sweetness, including the veterinarians. His interaction with other dogs has not been as favorable. We suspect that since his vision is compromised at the moment because of his eye issues he has become defensive when he meets other dogs. He displays friendly behavior towards other dogs when he knows they are confined so we expect that after his vision returns to normal he will display a more favorable reaction to other canines. Sadly, we have no available foster homes for Bruce. We are praying that some kind soul with no other animals in the home will step forward to foster or adopt Bruce. His recovery would no doubt be faster if he was out of the boarding kennel and in a loving home. PLEASE consider taking this wonderful boy into your home. 03/31/13: Another Medical Set-Back For Bruce Bruce recovered from his upper respiratory infection and has completed his heartworm treatment
